Slovakia is a country in central-eastern Europe, located withing the continental climate range. It has no natural borders. The neighbouring countries are: Poland from the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary from the south, Austria from the south-west, and Czech Republic from the west. The Slovak Republic was established in 1993 after the break-up of the federal republic of Czechoslovakia, which disintegrated to form two new countries: the Czech Republic (also known as 'Czechia'; it's capital is Prague), and Slovakia.

The country's population is about 5 and a half million and comprises mostly of Slovaks (which make up about 80% of the population), ethnic Hungarians living mostly in the southern regions (10%), Gypsy localities spread throughout the country, and some Polish, German, and Ukrainian (sometimes referred to as Ruthenian) minorities
